Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how CompoCheck Pty Ltd trading as CompoCheck ("we", "us", "our") collects, holds, uses and discloses your personal information. We are bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
CompoCheck is an information and advertising website. We are not a law firm and we do not give legal advice. Law firms that appear on this site are advertisers.
1. What we collect
When you use our eligibility check or contact us, we collect:
- Identity information: name, date of birth (where provided)
- Contact information: phone, email, postcode, state
- Claim information: nature and date of injury, medical attention received, current legal representation
- Technical information: IP address, browser, device, page visit data via standard analytics
Some claim information is sensitive personal information under the Privacy Act. We collect sensitive information only with your consent and only to the extent necessary to pass your enquiry to the law firm shown on the form.
2. How we use your information
- To send your enquiry to the law firm named on the form so that firm can contact you
- To keep a record of the consent you gave and the exact consent wording you were shown
- To improve our site, security and content quality (using aggregated or de-identified data)
- To comply with legal obligations
3. Who receives your enquiry
Your enquiry is sent to the law firm named on the form for your state and claim type, so that firm can contact you. Depending on your state and claim type, that firm may pay CompoCheck a fee for advertising on this site or for receiving your enquiry. We do not provide your details to anyone else. The receiving firm is responsible for your data under its own privacy policy and the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules.
If no law firm is advertising for your state and claim type, the form says so before you submit. In that case your enquiry is not sent to any law firm. We hold the contact details you give us only to let you know once if a firm becomes available, and we delete them after 90 days. We keep an anonymised record (state, claim type, dates) for volume reporting.
We may also disclose information to:
- Service providers (hosting, email, analytics) operating under confidentiality agreements
- Regulators or courts where legally required
- Professional advisers (lawyers, auditors)
4. Consent and opting out
The form asks for your consent before anything is sent, and the consent wording names the firm that will receive your enquiry. We record the exact consent text you were shown, and when you gave it. You can opt out of SMS from the firm at any time by replying STOP, of email using the unsubscribe link, or by contacting us at privacy@compocheck.com.au and we will pass your request to the firm that received your enquiry.
5. Data security
We protect your personal information using industry-standard physical, administrative and technical safeguards. Information transmitted via our forms is encrypted in transit (TLS). No internet transmission is 100% secure; you provide information at your own risk.
6. Data retention
We retain enquiry and consent records for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes set out in this policy and to comply with legal record-keeping obligations (typically 7 years). Where no firm was available for your state and claim type, contact details are deleted after 90 days as described in section 3. Records held by the firm that received your enquiry are retained under that firm's own retention schedule and the legal profession legislation in its state.
7. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct any inaccurate or out-of-date information
- Make a complaint about how we handle your information
Email privacy@compocheck.com.au to make a request. We respond within 30 days. Unresolved complaints can be escalated to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
8. Cookies and analytics
We use cookies and standard analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to understand how visitors use the site. These tools may collect anonymous information about your visit. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though some features of the site may not function correctly.
9. Overseas transfer
Some of our service providers (e.g. cloud infrastructure, email) may store data outside Australia, including in the United States and European Union. We take reasonable steps to ensure overseas recipients comply with the Australian Privacy Principles or substantially similar protections.
10. Updates
We may update this policy. The "Last updated" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be notified by email to subscribed users.
